Mastering iOS: Changing iMessage default replies.

My only reason for getting an Apple Watch was to make driving safer: If an iMessage came through while I was a driving, I didn’t want to have to pull my phone out of my pocket and try to read it, just to see if it was important or not. After pulling over a few times in rush hour to see if an incoming text was important and just finding spam, I got the Watch. It allows me to turn my wrist up, see the message quickly and tap a boilerplate reply if needed.

I don’t talk like a default iMessage.

While the default replies to iMessage were well thought-out they’re not how I talk. My answers were seeming abrupt and curt so I set out to figure out how to change these to what I would actually say and remove the replies I didn’t use and then having to send another text explaining if I hit one of these by accident.

How to change the default replies in iMessage.

Turns out this is easy and changes the boilerplate messages on your iPhone too:

  • On your iPhone open the Watch App.
  • Choose Messages.
  • Choose Default Replies.

To add messages:

  • Tap Add Reply.
  • Type your new message.
  • Tap Done.

To delete existing messages:

  • Swipe left on the message.
  • Tap Delete.

This makes replying on your watch much easier.
